If you’ve been banned from TikTok, this can be frustrating, to say the least. But when you’re unsure why this has happened, this can make for further annoyance. As it can with any platform ban, such as Instagram.
TikTok has a range of reasons for banning its users, these include:
- Breaching Community Guidelines – including content that is illegal.
- Sexually Explicit content
- Spam messages or comments
- High follow amounts in a short time
- Blackmail threats
- Sharing graphic content
- You’re under 13
However, there have been times when TikTok disables accounts in error. TikTok advises these are human moderation errors. However, unless you notice this early on, you may not be able to gain access to your account, even if it is done in error.
Types of TikTok ban and what they mean

Depending on why your TikTok account has been banned, will depend on how long your ban is. There are 3 types of the ban on TikTok, these are:
- Temporary ban
- Shadowban
- Permanent ban
A temporary ban on TikTok
A temporary ban is usually imposed when TikTok restricts an account. This is usually done when an account is considered to be spamming the platform. Usually via uploading too many videos or following a large number of people in a short time period
Shadowban
If you find yourself subject to a shadowban, you will still be able to upload, however, TikTok will restrict what users can see. In terms of your videos and other content, TikTok will stop this from being featured in any of the algorithms. Also, TikTok removes your posts from the hashtags you use.
A shadowban usually lasts around 14 days, you can continue upload as normal, but you’re likely to get fewer views.
If you are unsure whether you’ve had a shadowban put on your account, head to your statistics on your ‘for you’ page, and if you notice large drop-in views, this is a clear indicator. Another way to find out if you’ve been shadowbanned is via checking the hashtags you upload to and see if your post appears, if it doesn’t, this is a shadowban.
Permanent ban
If you are a regular rulebreaker on TikTok or you’re regularly being reported for your content this can result in a permanent ban. It’s easy to find out if you’ve been banned from the social media giant, as whenever you open your TikTok profile you will get a pop-up that says ‘Your account was permanently banned due to multiple violations of our community guidelines.’
When this happens to be the case, you may find it harder to fight an appeal, however, if you believe you did nothing wrong or were banned in error, here’s how to regain access to your TikTok account.

When looking to make your way around the ban, there are some methods you can try in order to get your account back in good standing. Although these methods aren’t instant, they should get your account unbanned.
Wait for the ban to be lifted
If you only have a temporary ban, then the best and easiest way to get it resolved is to wait for it to be lifted, which of course isn’t ideal. However, you can still challenge a shadowban, however, it is unknown the number of cases that have been overturned in this status. Please be aware, if you leave it too long without claiming, TikTok will no longer consider your appeal.
How to submit an appeal
Getting your account unbanned can be a complex process, but worth it if you believe your account was banned incorrectly. Submitting an appeal is easy if you know what you’re doing, so here’s how to submit an appeal in 4 easy steps.
- Open TikTok, and you should get a notification advising you are banned
- Click the notification, tap appeal, then you will be taken to the appeals page
- Write your reasoning for why you believe your account has been banned incorrectly e.g. you’ve followed all of the community guidelines
- Then submit the claim, there may be quite a long delay for your account to be reinstated, unfortunately.

TikTok deletes your account if you frequently break the community guidelines, as per most social media. Another reason TikTok users find their account deleted is if they joined TikTok when they were under the age of 13. As you need to be 13 in order to have an account. TikTok deleted 7.5 million under 13’s accounts in the first 3 months of 2021 alone.
You may also notice if you breach any TikTok advertising rules then you may risk being instantly banned and having your account deleted. Usually, TikTok will reject the video being posted if it violates their policy.
How to recover my deleted account?
If you decide to go ahead and delete your TikTok and then later change your mind, you may be able to get it back. However, after a certain period of time, the account will be permanently removed. If your TikTok is only in the deactivation phase. If you are not sure how to re-enable your deleted account, here’s how to regain access to your account with ease:
- Open the TikTok app, then choose the ‘Me’ icon from the bottom right-hand corner
- Select the ‘sign up’ option from the middle part of the screen
- After that tap log in, in the bottom right-hand corner
- Select use phone/email or username depending on how you signed up
- Then choose email/username in the upper right and corner
- Enter your TikTok username and password that you previously used
- Tap the Login button
- Next, you should see a message which states ‘your TikTok account is currently deactivated’
- Finally, tap cancel deactivation and retrieve your account back.
If you decide you want a break from TikTok deleting the app is a great alternative as it means you are not able to access it as quickly.
Conclusion
If you follow the terms and community guidelines set out by TikTok then you shouldn’t have an issue with your account. However, it is worth noting errors can happen on TikTok’s side.
